This UCSP class module defines civil society (in its broadest sense) as the set of institutions and patterns of behavior situated between the state, business, and the family. Unlike the government, business, and the family, civil society can take on many shapes and sizes and varied forms. Moreover, the module provides insight into organized civil society actions, or civil society organizations (CSOs), which can take different forms, most commonly as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), people’s organizations (POs), and non-profit organizations (NPOs).
