Use a vending machine to get a vile-flavoured drink such as cabbage, smelly sock or rusty nail. The machine serves a can of drink randomly from four slots. Guess which drink flavour is most likely to be served. Make several guesses and then check your results from the random sample. Work out the likelihood of an event in fraction terms, eg four correct guesses out of seven turns = 4/7. Next, move on to explore the language of likelihood in the activity called 'The vile vendor: questions'. This learning object is one in a series of three learning objects.
Objective
1. Students match probability situations with everyday chance words.
2. Students explore the tension between theoretical probability and randomness.
