Sea rescue: plotting the course

Description
Help a rescue crew to reach a sinking boat. Make a chart to guide the crew. Check the meaning of symbols, place them on a map and complete a key. Mark danger spots such as an oyster bed and submerged rock. Use the map to steer a safe course.
Objective

Students identify the content, structure, features and images of a map and key, and link these to their purpose, audience and context.
Students identify the symbolic, graphic, pictorial and diagrammatic conventions used in maps and keys.
Students make connections and explain relationships between different parts of a map.
