Measure the pH as you gradually add an acid to a base, or vice versa. Predict the change in pH when you mix acids and bases. Notice that the pH drops or rises quickly when the neutralisation point is almost reached. Remember, all acids and bases including the dilute solutions used in this object, can be harmful and should be handled with care. This learning object is one in a series of six objects.
Objective
1. Students use the pH scale to indicate degree of acidity.
2. Students measure pH while carrying out neutralisation reactions.
3. Students use the pH scale and universal indicators to distinguish acidic, basic and neutral solutions.
