Investigate how the strength of an electromagnet can be changed. Drop a steel can past an electromagnet and see how its path is curved. Change the number of batteries, the number of turns in the coil and the core material of the electromagnet and observe the effect. For example, compare the paths of the can when the electromagnet core is made of iron and of copper. This learning object is one in a series of three objects.
Objective
1. Students identify variables that affect the strength of an electromagnet.
2. Students describe the relationship between strength of an electromagnet, current, and number of turns in the coil.
