Build food chains to describe interactions within a forest environment. Look at the feeding patterns between plants and animals. Arrange an energy source, producer and consumers into a food chain such as Sun>tree>caterpillar>kookaburra. This learning object is one in a series of six objects.
Objective
Students classify living things as producers (plants), primary consumers and secondary consumers (herbivores, carnivores or omnivores).
Students construct simple food chains.
Students identify the Sun as an energy source at the start of all food chains.
Students identify plants as direct converters of energy from the Sun into a form that can be consumed by other living things.
Students explore the flow of energy from the Sun to plants and on to other living things.
