Investigate the advantages and disadvantages of banning commercial fishing in a coastal community. Review two points of view on the issue and the arguments that support them. Gather opinions from local residents such as a fisherman, an environmental scientist and a supermarket owner. Consider issues of ecological sustainability, economic development, social responsibility and lifestyle. Recommend the best course of action. This learning object is one in a series of two objects.
Objective
1. Students investigate the environmental, social and economic consequences of regulating commercial fishing.
2. Students recommend a course of action that will maximise the environmental, social and economic benefits of managing fish populations.
