Design a chair that is well suited for use in a cafeteria and also has a low impact on the natural environment. Look closely at requirements in a design brief such as durability, stylishness and hygiene features. Ask school staff and students which design factors are important. Improve the chair's appeal and usefulness by choosing options for elements such as frame, materials and colour. Minimise environmental impact by choosing design elements such as ease of cleaning, effects of manufacturing processes and features that make it easy to recycle the chair. Look at production and maintenance processes. Use client feedback to refine the design. Evaluate the chair's performance after the first week and after five years. This learning object is one in a series of five objects.
Objective

Students explore the short-term and long-term consequences of product design decisions.
Students explore how the design of an object affects other objects and people within the built environment it is placed into, and therefore influences other design decisions.
Students configure design elements to meet needs defined in a design brief, including ergonomic factors.
Students test design ideas and respond to stakeholder feedback.
