Light and reflection: reflecting off surfaces

Learning Material  |  Interactive Lesson

Description
Observe balls bouncing off surfaces of different roughness. Arrange the surfaces according to how much they scatter the balls. Observe light beams reflecting off surfaces of different roughness. Arrange the surfaces according to how much they scatter the light beams. Choose a reflector to help a castaway flash a beam of sunlight at a passing ship. Notice that surface roughness and flatness both affect reflection properties. This learning object is one in a series of six objects. Some of the objects are also packaged as two combined learning objects.
Objective
Students explore angles of incidence using plane mirrors.
Students predict the direction that light will be reflected by fixed mirrors.
