Compound shapes: small shapes

Learning Material  |  Interactive Lesson

Description
Estimate the area of a simple polygon. Try counting squares on a grid to help your estimate. Cut the shape into rectangles and triangles. Use a formula to calculate the exact area for each of the simple shapes. Then find the total area for the original polygon. Try dividing the shape again into fewer pieces. This learning object is the first in a series of three objects that progressively increase in difficulty.
Objective
1. Students identify rectangles and triangles that comprise compound polygons.
2. Students understand that compound polygons can be cut into triangles and rectangles in a number of different ways.
3. Students estimate the area of compound polygons.
4. Students apply formulas for the area of rectangles and triangles to calculate the area of compound polygons.
