Learning Material  |  Interactive Lesson

Published on 2016 August 24th

Description
Turn an animated model of the Earth to explore how rotation is related to night and time of day. Notice that when the Sun shines on one side of the Earth, the other side is in darkness. Answer a series of questions by experimenting with the model. For example, when the Sun rises in New Zealand, what is the approximate time in Sydney?
Objective

Students use a model to relate day and night to the rotation of the Earth.
Students use a model to observe that half of the Earth's surface is exposed to sunlight (at any given time).
Students predict whether it will be day, night, sunrise or sunset for a particular location shown on a model of the Earth.
