Description
Test a machine that randomly packages two types of fruit jubes: kookaburra and koala. Notice that koala jubes are twice as likely to be produced within a packet of 12 jubes. Look at patterns in sequences of jube types such as 3 koala jubes occurring in a row. Manually choose jube types for a new packet. Explore the longest run of any jube type. Compare the results from larger random samples. Identify whether the longest run in your packet is similar to the longest run most likely to occur in a randomly produced packet. This learning object is one in a series of 17 objects.
Objective
1. Students analyse data about random events to test conjectures about variation.
2. Students interpret frequency graphs to compare experimental results with theoretical probabilities.
3. Students compare the shape of theoretical and experimentally derived data distributions.
4. Students relate the shape of data distributions to statements about sample variation and sample size.
