Observe that ground reaction force is an upward force exerted on the feet during impact, and then relayed to the knees. Examine slow motion replays and graphs of reaction forces during jumps. Investigate the size of the ground reaction force and stopping time when a person jumps from a range of heights. Identify how much the hardness of the landing surface and the shoe construction determine the amount of cushioning. This learning object is one in a series of two objects.
Students investigate variables that contribute to the ground reaction force experienced by the human body.
Students collect, record and interpret data to evaluate factors that affect the impact of ground reaction force on the human body.
