Description
Compare the sizes and angles of a range of triangles, squares and rectangles. Notice that 'similar shapes' in the mathematical sense have the same shape and possibly different sizes. Corresponding sides are in proportion, and corresponding angles are equal. Identify shapes that are similar and create shapes similar to given shapes. This learning object is the first in a series of eight objects that progressively increase in difficulty.
Objective
1. Students manipulate shapes to distinguish between similar and non-similar plane shapes.
2. Students identify corresponding sides and angles of plane shapes.
3. Students apply mathematical language and criteria to identify and create similar shapes.
